Part of the ethos of the Kickz programme is to bring disadvantaged young people from different areas together to encourage community cohesion. One of the ways this is done is by arranging friendly football matches against other Kickz Clubs.
Over the past week, the under 14 and under 19 age groups have played against Aston Villa Kickz Projects.
The Under 14’s fixture took place on Friday 14th January at Aldersley Stadium in Wolverhampton. The 15 young people who were selected to take part had the highest levels at Kickz sessions. All the participants were really looking forward to the game and had a fantastic attitude throughout. The team spirit that Kickz looks to create amongst young people was evident by young people who weren’t selected for the game turning up to show their support.
Despite losing 6-1, all the young people who took part were a credit to the Wolves Kickz project, something that was noted by Aston Villa staff. Kickz Co-ordinator, Mike Wynters said: ‘The Wolves Kickz team had a fantastic attitude, they battled all the way through the game and never gave up, they are a real credit to Wolverhampton Wanderers and their Kickz project’.
The under 19’s team, again made up of 15 young people with high attendance levels, travelled to Birmingham on Monday 17th January for their fixture at Aston Park. After a 13 goal thriller, Wolves came out victorious, 7 goals to 6. The lads performance again drew praise from the Villa staff who commented on both their fantastic attitudes and the football they player.
The Wolves Community Trust staff who deliver Kickz each week were also extremely impressed with the way the teams conducted themselves, Jennifer Mildenhall, Wolves Kickz Co-ordinator said: “These lads have known each other less than 3 months and this is the first match they have played together, all the Kickz staff were over the moon with the way each and every one of them conducted themselves.”
More fixtures will be arranged in the near future so watch this space!!
